A Visit to the Puerto Aventuras Library

Did you know we have a public library right here inside Puerto Aventuras? Would it surprise you to know our little library turns 20 this year? It sure surprised me so I made a trip to the biblioteca see it for myself.

Tucked into a couple of classrooms inside the Colegio Puerto Aventuras, the library or biblioteca has been welcoming students and members of the community to browse its stacks since March 1, 2004. Thanks to the inspiration of its founders, Gaylita Dunaway Adams (owner of the beloved local restaurant Café Olé) and her friend Babs Griswold and the dedication of many volunteers, the tiny library has really grown.

On my recent visit, I was struck by how this little gem has evolved since it first opened its doors. From humble beginnings with just a few boxes of donated children’s books, the library has blossomed into a treasure trove of nearly 20,000 cataloged titles all carefully organized using the good old Dewey Decimal System. It brought me straight back to my days as a child searching through the card catalogs for my “summer reading list” books at my local public library.

The books include everything from pre-reader and beginning-reader books to middle-school, young adult, and adult fiction, non-fiction, and reference books—with many titles both in English and Spanish. Whether you’re looking for a new novel, a classic piece of literature, or educational resources, the shelves here are bursting with possibilities.

What really makes this library special, though, is the community behind it. Operated entirely by volunteers, including dedicated students, it’s clear that passion fuels this place. From organizing books and keeping the space tidy to assisting members in finding their next great read, the volunteers’ efforts are the heartbeat of the library.

Their dedication doesn’t stop there. They also work tirelessly throughout the year to raise funds and increase community engagement through events like open-house bazaars, scavenger hunts during national reading week, and 50/50 raffles at local restaurants.

The library operates without any formal income, relying solely on memberships, donations, and fundraising events. A lifetime family membership is just 200 pesos (free for students of the school) and a small price to support such a meaningful community resource.

Every peso goes directly toward purchasing essential supplies like computers, printers, shelving, and book labels to ensure the library continues to thrive.

What struck me most during my visit with Gaylita and volunteer coordinator Maria Belt was their focus on fostering a love for reading in children. From creating special reading programs to hosting events that bring books to life, the library is more than a place to borrow books. It’s a safe space for connection, learning, and imagination.

How Do You Find the Library?

The library is very accessible. It is located inside the Colegio Puerto Aventuras on Bahia Yanten, right across from the Grand Marina, so it’s easy to pop in and explore the collection.

Once you have arrived at the school, go in the main entrance and go to your immediate left. The door to the library is well-marked and you can’t miss it!

The library is open to the public Monday through Friday from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM (except on holidays and non-student days). If you’re not sure when to visit, updates and events are regularly posted on their Facebook page.
