We were in PA20 years ago And thought it was quite Different from Cancun. What can you tell me the differences between then and now ? Could you please send me information on rentals and real estate opportunities. Thank you
Aside from the fact that most of the lots have been purchased and built upon, I think you might actually find that Puerto Aventuras has not changed all that very much. There are a lot more people living here full time… lot more families with children. There are also quite a few more restaurants and shops that have opened to fill the needs of the community. I think you may be surprised to find that the PA of today looks and feels very similar to the PA of 20 years ago. A master plan that worked! If you are interested in investigating the real estate options here in PA, we would be happy to refer you to an excellent, licensed agent who specializes in this market.
Hola !! Muchas gracias 🙏🏼😍
I am so saddened by this news. The world has lost one of its kindest souls. Mick, I will miss your stories and ability to live life to the fullest. Most of all, I will miss your friendship. God speed.
Mick and I practiced together for 40 years. We went to law school together as well. He was one of my dearest friends and when he went to Mexico, I lost track of him. He disappeared from so many lives in Oregon but started a new, happier life in Mexico. He was one in a million. Rest in peace my very good friend. Jim Huegli Portland Oregon
It’s always exciting to witness the unique cultural celebrations around the world, and Día de los Muertos and Halloween in Puerto Aventuras is no exception. The blend of Latin American and North American traditions make this time of year particularly special in this beautiful Mexican paradise. The vibrant colors, joyful music, and delicious food all contribute to a welcoming atmosphere that brings the community together to honor and remember loved ones no longer with us. Anyone visiting Puerto Aventuras in 2023 should definitely add this celebration to their itinerary!
Hola, gracias por comentar. De momento es temporada muy alta, siendo Spring Break, y samana santa, por lo que hay muy pocos carritos de golf disponibles y los precios son un poco más altos.
Hi Mary-Ann, you should try joining the Puerto Aventuras Living facebook group. There is regular rental opportunities there, or you can ask for help in the group.
Personally, everyone who is paying for their holiday should be able to have their smoke/vape in a designated area or even on their private balcony! We’re all paying to enjoy our holiday as much as the non smokers. There shouldn’t be any smoking allowed in rooms. That’s pretty gross 🤮. As a smoker, I’m respectable to wherever I stay and bring a butt up and dispose of contents in a bag or ziplock bag in the garbage safely.
I feel strongly that smoking shouldn’t be allowed in restaurants either. That’s disgusting as well. I do enjoy going to a cabana with a coffee or two in the evening away from people to enjoy my evening and smokes.
Tomato or potato…I’d go to a different vacation destination other than Mexico 🤷🏻♀️
So many articles on Maya Train. So far i have not seen any confirmation to schedule. Will we be able to,travel this train from Merida to Palenque this January?
I really wanted to go to Cancun in 2024 and I was on the point of booking a flight from Europe. And not only Cancun, Cozumel was on the shortlist as well. But staying on the beach with a drink and no smoke ? Eating at an open restaurant or enjoying a drink at a bar and no cigarette ? No thanks. Too bad, as I have some good friends that were in Cancun and told me it’s beyond beautiful. But I’ll have to redirect my plans to some other places. I think businesses should really fight to keep their tourists (smokers or not). Ultimately, it’s the smoker’s choice. If someone wants to harm himself, who’s the government to stop him ?
I guess if the Mexican government was sincere about stopping smoking they would ban the sale of cigarettes in their country.
As a smoker I personally think the law is stupid. It’s not going to make people quit. It will reduce the amount of tourism. We had our holiday booked prior to the law being changed. We did go to Mexico, but will not be returning. It isn’t really enforced yet but it still affects your vacation and where you’re willing to spend your money to go. Speaking with a lot of Mexicans, their consensus is the law is stupid as well. Perhaps the next president will repeal it.
There are very few actual fotos of An Tren-Maya construction or details of completion of rail or stations of maintenance shops or operational centres.
This is troublesome as we approach the end of 2023.
I love the cenotes in Riviera Maya and these near Puerto Aventuras look and sound amazing. I didn’t know how they were formed so that was really intriguing.
Wow, I had no idea that there were so many cenotes! Over 7000 is incredible! Seeing that blue, teal water for myself will be incredible! Thanks for the breakdown!
I’ve never heard of cenotes before reading this article! It sounds like there a quite a few places to check out the cenotes around Peurto Aventuras. Thanks for sharing your top recommendations!
Oh, my gosh — how that area has been swamped with tourist infrastructure!
(And to think, within some ouf our lifetimes this was dense jungle accessible only by boat. Check out Michel Peissel’s The Lost World of Quintana Roo.)
It has been a long time since our last visit to the Mexican Riviera. But I have some pretty bad memories of the airport. Great to read that the new Tulum Airport might finally be a reality. Good to have a better option than flying to Cancun. And an airport train makes a lot of sense. Might have to get to planning our next Mexican adventure.
I am so excited to learn that the airport in Tulum is nearing completion! Love Mexico and have been there 27x. This airport will be so convenient to the Mayan Riviera.
I’ve never been to Mexico before but I’d love to visit one day. Lovely to hear that this airport is convenient to Mayan Riviera. I’m sure it will help a lot of travellers exploring Mexico. Thanks for sharing this helpful post!
LOVE it! Love the rich history and ruins to explore, love all the beaches, love the fresh food.,.. would love to visit someday..saving this post for the bucket list
what an amazing and educational experience!! It’s so nice that the distillery re-opened. I had never thought about the definition of moonshine but thought it was super cool that it meant doing something forbidden at night.
I had my first moonshine when we visited upstate New York. Fun to find a distillery in Mexico with the flavours of the Caribbean. And to find out more about moonshine on a great tour. I would certainly try Island Distilling Blackberry Moonshine with Sprite and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yummy!
I haven’t played golf yet. And it’s surprising that I am amazed by the places where golf can be played. I realized how calming it would be because of these green and relaxing places.
Thank you for providing such detail about the Mayan Train and all of its potential impacts, I didn’t even realize this was a project that was happening, so I’ve learned a lot from this post!
I love tacos so visiting Tacos El Arbolito is definitely on my bucket list. The fresh ingredients and plentiful offerings are what makes this restaurant a great find. Thank you for sharing!
I’m very impressed that Taqueria El Arbolito has retained its standards and quality as it has grown and become so well known. Well done to them! Interesting ordering protocols! Glad you explained that. I wonder if people find it confusing or if it all just falls into place?
This is such a unique and comprehensive article. Being from Australia, I wasn’t aware they were building a train. I might consider this when I eventually plan a trip to Cancun in future. However, it’s very sad about the potential displacement of indigenous communities. I also feel torn about the amount of money put into this and both the positive and negative impacts. It would be a shame if it didn’t go ahead as intended.
Tacos is something we just don’t seem to get right over here in Europe. These tacos from Tacos El Arbolito look positively mouthwatering. Also the fact they have remained authentic makes me want to go even more!
The Heaven at Hard Rock Riviera Maya with the little private pool looks amazing. I’m also interested in the Chez Waffle place! That looks like a really fun place with all the quirky decor! Pinning this for the future!
Very insightful article, learnt some new things about Mexico. Mexico is a beautiful and economical country & I would love to explore it as a digital nomad when my kids finish high school.
I do understand the issues with Uber and taxis. But I love when clean and fast Ubers are available when we travel. Good to know a reasonable agreement was reached in Cancun. It will be interesting how this will work out.
Wow, I’m so inspired by this! I’ve had Mexico on my bucket list for so long and after this blog, I’m about ready to go book tickets right now haha. Loved how many beautiful sites you listed and lots of really helpful information on visiting these places!
So many Mayan ruins to visit. I’ve read a lot about the Mayan civilization, but haven’t actually visited Mayan ruins yet. Of course Chichen Itza and Tulum are on my must visit list, but Ek Balam would be great to if you can still climb it.
Duna Beach Club sounds like an amazing place to relax and unwind. I’d love to visit this place some day. Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts about this beach club!
Christmas at the Riviera Maya coast looks stunning! I have only visited Mexico in summer, would be great to check out the DUNA Xpu Ha Beach Club next time, especially if you loved it enough to call the best one!
I love tacos so much: I wish I knew about Tacos el Arbolito back when I visited Riviera Maya! Tasting local cuisine at a family-run taqueria would be a memorable gourmet experience!
The cenotes of Riviera Maya are one and only! I have only visited one, but would love to explore them all – checking out the Cenote Ponderosa would be epic, no wonder it is called Jardin del Eden! Thanks for the inspiration
What a great detailed post with beautiful photos! I love Mexico and warm weather destinations so will be back to explore more when we are traveling on that continent again!
I’ve been to all the ruins on the list except Muyil which looks worth a visit. But, I have also not been to Puerto Aventuras which I totally want to check out now!
Wow, I had no idea there were so many different and unique Mayan ruins to visit! Seeing the Mayan ruins is a goal of mine, so I will keep these tips and suggestions in mind!
Wow, what a fabulous and detailed post. You make me homesick for Mexico as it has been too long since I have been there. These look like amazing ruins to explore on my next visit!
You will have to make a trip back!!! FYI… I have been following you for YEARS. I used to have a blog called Lifes A Beach Blog. I had you on my blogroll way back when we did that kind of thing. We were both traveling with little kids at the time.
I hadn’t heard about the visitax before, but I hope it helps in preserving the nature and culture in Quintana Roo. Great information, especially about the fake sites. I’m curious about why you don’t have to pay visitax if you leave via the Belize border.
Puerto Aventuras sounds like a great base to explore the Riviera Maya. I would love to do all the day trips, but Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba are on top. I’ve read a lot about the Mayan civilization.
So Puerto Aventuras is a perfect base to explore Mayan ruins, which is what I would love to do when I get to visit Mexico. I have heard of most of these, but Kohunlich was new to me.
This is definitely big news! I’ve been to Cancun and I would have loved to have a train there. What great efficiencies and hopefully better for the environment too. Thank you!!
I love this article so much. These are great tips, and I wish more people knew about them. So I’m glad that you are spreading the awareness and importance about saving our oceans.

As scuba divers were love to see great tips on how to save the coral reefs. So sad to see places like the Mesoamerican Reef dying! Great to see the big projects to protect the reef. But good to also see what each of us can do!

I remember during the dive they were hunting lion fishes and I couldn’t understand why but did come to learn how invasion that fish is to these reefs – so I’m glad you’ve included that because not too many are aware 🙂
We have lionfish hunters who go out in groups every weekend. They are stunningly beautiful fish but they do not belong here and are killing off fish that are vital to the health of the Mesoamerican reef system.

This looks so delicious! The tips about how to order are always helpful when going to a new place for the first time, thanks for sharing!

your vivid narratives (AND THOSE PICS 🤤) are making my mouth water! what a culinary gem!
Tacos is something we just don’t seem to get right over here in Europe. These tacos from Tacos El Arbolito look positively mouthwatering. Also the fact they have remained authentic makes me want to go even more!

This is a great overview of how to get to the new Tulum International Airport. It seems like a great option for people visiting Tulum, Mexico.
Great post! It looks better and I had no idea there is a plan for a train. It will be great when that is completed.
Great and detailed article! Will be very useful for someone traveling to this airport. Love the photos to help with visualization.
Very insightful article, learnt some new things about Mexico. Mexico is a beautiful and economical country & I would love to explore it as a digital nomad when my kids finish high school.
It is great when they can find an equitable solution. Fingers crossed that it works out well.
I hope so too. We have enjoyed using Uber in other parts of Mexico. Just hoping it works out here!
I do understand the issues with Uber and taxis. But I love when clean and fast Ubers are available when we travel. Good to know a reasonable agreement was reached in Cancun. It will be interesting how this will work out.
I’ve only been to Chichen Itza but am hoping to visit the others on your list on a longer visit soon.
Don’t miss Ek Balam. It’s underrated and overlooked by many.
Wow, I’m so inspired by this! I’ve had Mexico on my bucket list for so long and after this blog, I’m about ready to go book tickets right now haha. Loved how many beautiful sites you listed and lots of really helpful information on visiting these places!

Yes and it’s really one of the only climbable ruins left in this area. I’m not sure how long that will last…
What a great way to spend your holiday! It looks beautiful here.
I’m lucky to live right down the road from this beautiful beach!!
DUNA beach club looks like a wonderful way to spend the day at the beach. The tipi loungers especially looked appealing.
I’m looking forward to a day off so we can get back there again!
Duna Beach Club sounds like an amazing place to relax and unwind. I’d love to visit this place some day. Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts about this beach club!
It’s worth the trip even if you are staying in Playa del Carmen or Tulum.
Hola. I was wondering what your golf cart rates or for 1 or 2 days?
HI Ken,
Youn have sent this message to a website, not the business, Bamboo Cafe. Their contact details are mentioned above. Thanks
The snorkeling looks amazing. What I would really like to try after reading this are the Cenotes. Thanks for the great guide.
Love the scuba pictures!
Christmas at the Riviera Maya coast looks stunning! I have only visited Mexico in summer, would be great to check out the DUNA Xpu Ha Beach Club next time, especially if you loved it enough to call the best one!
Oooo, our summers are hot. Perfect for going to the beach!! SO far, this is very close to the top of our beach club list.
These beach photographs look so incredibly beautiful.
I never stop appreciating how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place!
Thank you for sharing. I hadn’t heard about this. It seems like many countries are starting to implement a tourist tax.
I think may countries already have them. Mexico does. This one is specific to the state of Quintana Roo only which makes it even more interesting.
Wow! The Mayan ruins look incredible! Sending this to my husband hoping he’ll book our next trip, lol thanks!!
What a great detailed post with beautiful photos! I love Mexico and warm weather destinations so will be back to explore more when we are traveling on that continent again!
I visited Playa Del Carmen on a Caribbean cruise port excursion but I’d love to explore the rest of the region!
Wonderful post and makes me want to visit to get out the cold.
Wow! So many amazing options! I really need to spend more time exploring Mexico, there are so many beautiful places.
I’ve been to all the ruins on the list except Muyil which looks worth a visit. But, I have also not been to Puerto Aventuras which I totally want to check out now!
My family had the chance to visit Tulum and take a tour while there. The history of the area is simply fascinating!
It really is. Not sure I love how much Tulum has changed over the past decade ot so. The ruins and the cenotes are still as magical as ever.
Wow, I had no idea there were so many different and unique Mayan ruins to visit! Seeing the Mayan ruins is a goal of mine, so I will keep these tips and suggestions in mind!
There are even more within an hour or so of our front door!! We are pretty lucky!
Mexico is my happy place! Love this guide to all the fun water activities at Puerto Aventuras Marina. Would be so fun to charter a catamaran.
Puerto Aventuras Marina seems like a beautiful place to be! I am headed to Mexico soon and I have already pinned this to get some inspiration!
The diving and snorkeling looks wonderful from your photos!
What a dream location this looks like, I would definitely visit the nearby Maya ruins.
This looks incredible! I never knew about the connection between dragon boating and breast cancer survivors before!
I had no idea about this! So glad I know in advance!
These trips look next level! The water looks so clear everywhere 🤩
Looks like a fun, inspiring event!
I hadn’t heard about the visitax before, but I hope it helps in preserving the nature and culture in Quintana Roo. Great information, especially about the fake sites. I’m curious about why you don’t have to pay visitax if you leave via the Belize border.
I think because hundreds of Belizians come across the border every day to work. But that’s just a guess.
Oh wow. This looks like such a great service for tourists and locals alike!
Looks like this will be a game changer for travel in the area. Awesome.
This is definitely big news! I’ve been to Cancun and I would have loved to have a train there. What great efficiencies and hopefully better for the environment too. Thank you!!
I had no idea about this train (station)! Such a great informative post on this and an amazing way to get around.
I love this article so much. These are great tips, and I wish more people knew about them. So I’m glad that you are spreading the awareness and importance about saving our oceans.
Thank you Chelsea! The reef is so much more important than just a pretty place to dive and snorkel!!
Lovely post! Happy to say we try to follow most of these, especially coral friendly sunscreen, planting trees and using eco friendly products.
Thank you!! We can ALL do something to help!
In Florida we’re dealing the same issues at our reefs in the Florida Keys. You’ve given great information and very helpful tips for protection of the Mesoamerican Reef as well as reefs around the world.
Yes, the issue is global!!
As scuba divers were love to see great tips on how to save the coral reefs. So sad to see places like the Mesoamerican Reef dying! Great to see the big projects to protect the reef. But good to also see what each of us can do!
Thank you Linda!! If we all do our part, hopefully we can turn this around!
I loved this blog and its focus on conservation. Saving this as a reminder to travel responsibly!
Thank you Tara!!
These are great tips! I’ve dove a small part of the mesoamerican reef (off the coast of Cozumel) and it is such a special place worth protecting!!! I remember during the dive they were hunting lion fishes and I couldn’t understand why but did come to learn how invasion that fish is to these reefs – so I’m glad you’ve included that because not too many are aware 🙂
